| The 2009 season is off and running with some early season quality stripers beginning to show at Cape Ann. I took this real nice 27" striper Thursday afternoon on a Green Trickster at Candy house flat. It was the only fish I took. Two other anglers each hooked one fish as well, both good sized, 20 to 24 inches. I have also got reports from south of Cape Ann that good numbers of stripers are showing up so I expect the fishing to only improve going forward, so it's time to get out the gear and give it a go. Spin anglers should try white lead head jigs with a white soft plastic tails or silver spoon types with a white bucktail tail. Fly anglers should throw any good baitfish or sand eel pattern. As far as the Shad run goes.....it is starting slow with a few fish being taken at various locations from Rocks Village on up to the Lawrence Dam. The run should begin to improve within a week or so. I also expect that good numbers of stripers ought to be showing this weekend at the Merrimack. If you get out, try upriver of the RT 1 bridge.
