Cape Ann Report

The Cape Ann striper fishing action is in full summer pattern. Over the course of last week we found solid numbers of 20-25 inch healthy stripers from Halibut Point on south to Back Shore. The stripers were found tight into the shoreline structure as well as up on top “slurping” (see short video clip below). We were able to hook up fish on flies, top water poppers, soft plastic Fin-S baits and jig head Tuf-Core sand lances. We also found numerous pods of bluefish at the east shoal of Straitsmouth and near Milk Is.

Dave and I made our way offshore in search of football tuna. We had little difficulty finding tuna but had no luck getting them to open their mouths. We found literally, 2 square miles of tuna just 5 miles north of the NW corner of Stellwagon. The tuna were mixed in sizes; some pods were 30-50 pounds while other pods were up to 100 pounds. The tuna were on the surface feeding on small red shrimp and had little interest in our top water plugs or metal jigs. We have on good report that solid numbers of similarly sized tuna have moved north to some 3 or 4 miles ESE of Thatcher. We hope to get out there this week.

Winchester Fishing’s Dan Winchester reports that they have weighed in several tournament quality stripers and bluefish last week. More details next week.

Steve P. landed and released a super striper of 46 inches a few days ago. The striper fell for a Jumpin’ Minnow while wet wading Coffin beach. Steve also reported catching good numbers of smaller stripers and blues at various other shoreline locations around the Cape.

Capt Al's Merrimack River Report
Capt Al reports that the Joppa flat fishing continues to be better than expected for this late into the summer season. He believes the reasons are; water temperatures remaining on the coolish side, late season crab hatch, and just real good numbers of fresh stripers arriving just about every day. The night time eel action is also very strong with many 30+ pound fish being taken by the commercial and recreational guys alike.
