Cape Ann Report

The fall run is underway. Large schools of bluefish can be found around Cape Ann feeding on massive schools of peanut bunker. However, most of the action is away from the shore line. I have not as yet seen large schools of stripers pushing peanut bunker but expect that to happen soon. Some large stripers are showing up in around the rocky shoreline areas in Gloucester harbor and a few of the beach areas. These fish are taking top waters and swimmers, fished slowly. Best times are low light hours. The fall striper and bluefish angling in all likelihood will improve dramatically over the next several weeks. There are huge amounts of peanut bunker around Cape Ann and to the north. Large schools of 20-25 inch stripers have been seen in the Merrimack River estuary and at the rivers mouth. Reports “downeast” are similar….lot’s of bait and stripers.

Brothers Eric and Nick show off their bluefish

The offshore tuna bite was very good the beginning of last week but dropped off quickly at weeks end. The abundant bait has dispersed somewhat and thus spread out the tuna. Excellent tuna fishing can be found well south on Stellwagon near Chatham and P-Town. Some reports indicate good numbers of tuna to north just offshore in S. Maine. We expect the tuna bite to improve this week and into the beginning of October.
