Cape Ann report
The hurricane offshore created large swells and high surf for most of last week, so I did not get out on the water much at all. The ocean settled down enough for me to get offshore on Friday. I spent the better part of six hours looking for tuna and found none. The area that I covered was a ten mile track from SE of Thatcher to NE of Halibut Point, 5-8 miles off the coast line. The trip was in fact interesting when a large school of B&W dolphin put on an aerial show; for free! I found myself completely surrounded by several dozen of these incredible critters who were very much aware of my presence and seemed to enjoy swimming right up close to my boat and take a quick glance at me. I spent about 20 minutes watching them and snapping about a dozen photos.

I decided to head back to shore and check out the stripers and bluefish. As I passed just NW of the breakwater, I saw a very large fin breaking the surface of the relatively calm water. I quickly determined the fin to belong to an Ocean Sunfish. I approached the huge fish very slowly and was rewarded with a very good up close look at this most unusual fish. I estimated the fish to be close to 200 pounds. I snapped off several photos and resumed my course to Straitsmouth Island.

I decided to fish the “gap” first and up tight to the island side. On my first cast, I hooked a nice 25 inch fish. I made several more drifts and caught a few 20 + inch fish. I next moved to the south facing shore and again found and hooked up several more stripers. Up toward the lighthouse, I found the birds working the surface over bait. The bait was being pushed by a fair sized pod of 7-10 pound blues. I hooked and landed a couple on a popping plug and decided to run down the coast and check out Pebble beach and Milk Island. I was hoping to find lots of bait but found none anywhere along the beach or out at the island. I managed a couple of small stripers on the Milk Island spit and called it day. I fully expect the blitz to continue since reports from my sources north of here are still talking about an abundance of stripers and blues. With the weather looking good this week, I plan on getting offshore and down to Stellwagon and fish tuna. I will also check the beach areas to keep tabs on the bait, stripers and blues.
